Lil Indie 64
Boy Howdy! I'm a new art cat explorin le groovy Indieweb n HTML ooo lala le MROWL! :)
Weird Web October transitioning to Poseurtober due to amateur HTML skills but also due to, well hey, why don't we chock it up to good ol fashioned moxie!
Hey skippin the Poseurtober thang, buuuuut . . . I DO like that name (with modifications) for a Fest or Project, such as Poseurfest, soooo will pin that fleur on my lapel and let that pose for a while as I sa-lowly figure out this HTML shtuff. THUS! My logo design for the INDIEWEB UNTECHNIBLY MINDED (IUM). Presented unperfectly as I have yet to figure out how to change the background color of my site so the white background is not bleeding into my logo. Now how perfect is that?
Ungawa Comix ! ! !
le book le club le join errrr . . . how shall I say ??? um, casually
comix super pages colors creepoids caped cool weirdos
comix art huzza huzza
Thots, Reflections n Feelings + a lil Hardcore Reminiscing while reading Understanding Comics (1993) by Scott McCloud as I wander through the Book Club, OK cue Clubland (1980/81) by Elvis Costello
but then cue . .
Understanding Those @?#$%! Comics
er
Comix
"I got this camera click click clickin in my head . . " from the song I'm Not Angry by Elvis Costello 1977
I'm still angry.
But hey then, just as now
I had comics. And this was a way I could blow off some steam, observe new or hidden worlds, fall captive to strange sexy beings and most of all . .
become completely enchanted by
New Art
Bold Art
Brave Art
Absurd Art
Weird Art
Hm. Especially the weird art. Cuz what more could a lil LA artist kid, born in Santa Monica mostly as an only child to a mostly single parent mom, growing up in Palms/West LA/Culver City/Mar Vista/Venice/U Name It, ask for?
Well. He could ask for A LOT more and or want more AND need more, hence the angry part.
But there were comics. And they were fun, weird, strange, perplexing, elegant, sophisticated, brutal, vexing, hilarious, dumb and bursting with might, muscles, brains, hot bodies, sexual tension and sexual tension.
the visceral sensual tension of the possibility of New Worlds. New Forms. New Space and Relatedness. Relatingness.
Beingness.
Oh there was horror too. And humour. And violence. And tenderness. And freakiness. And otherness. And . .
resolution
some kind of resolution or solution or an answer to some problem or conflict, some happy (for now) ending to be continued same Bat Time, same Bat Whatever and at .25 .35 .50 .60 .75 cents $1 $1.25 Prestige limited series format $2.99 $4.99 uh Only! . .
resolution came a callin'
burstin off the pages in full flamin colour!
and I listened. and read. and bought. and stole (for a spell, sorry 7-11)
then I reread. then collected. then organized. then reorganized. then fussed over some more. then discovered my favorite artists. then obsessed. then fanboy'd. then geeked out. then felt a secret thrill over my secret thrills cuz really this has got to be the best secret thrill among secret thrills, tho I wouldn't really know that unless we actually shared our secret thrills, which would completely cancel out the secret part then where would I be?
no secret thrill.
no resolution.
just me.
So hey. Here I am in 2025, joined at the cell, er, my cell (prison allusion noted. em, shouldn't we all be angry?) and now joining a Book Club (first time!), online and #indieweb as it is.
Here^, and uh since I dont know how to do this, I'll jus do jus by doing this, bookclubbing it, as it were, and plan on not having a plan and jus wing it with a miscellany-ai of thots, feelings, reflections, digressions, regressions, aggressions, art, comics, comix, curious detours n detournement as I read thee indieweb book clubbers' book Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud 1993.
All messy intuitive artful n raw, and aww heck, as livebloggy as I care to be.
impressionistic
comixfuzzztastic
oh and hey! it occured to me while writing this that I'm sharing some things with our bookclubby thing (and whoever happens to read this). deep things. silly things. personal things.
I'm sharing some of my secret thrills.
which may mean that over the years and through whatever personal work I've done, whatever inner work, light dark n medium hued . . may have healed me a little. may have escorted me beyond or through an intense need for resolution. which is good.
and I'm reminded of how my art practice and writing and curatorial work n interdisciplinary work have all been central and key sites and actions to explore and process a lot of unresolved stuff. my art, my joy and attraction to other's art, such as the ones we're exploring n sharing with the bookclub group and beyond, have all been there for me. for fun . . and for healing.
so yeah. I'm reading about the origins of comics in this fun n bold book and feelin thinkin about my origins with comics and the origins of me.
those @?#$%! comics
^Here on my lilindie64 dot neocities dot org, I'll share my #indieweb book club sshtuff. AND on my tulips dot pckt dot blog I'll share mostly the same written stuff with the comix tag but with some variable artworks and perhaps some additional notes thots whatever as the mood strikes. Check'm both out!
Big Howdy! to our host Joe and our comics curious #indieweb Book Club and passersby. I'm excited to read your shares.

ART POP, The Body Electric
and how is it that I came to the writer Ann Quin and her 1964 novel Berg?
who knows?
just singin the body electric I guess. or at least wifi. and a healthy amount of curiousity.
is the internet a place, a space, or . . ??
beats me. it somewhat mirrors a page.
uh. somewhat.
I'll check out Ann Quin some other time, as her story, I mean her story, seems pretty fascinating. and really, when ya get right down to it, everybodys is. millions n trillions n kajillians of people, all living their stories.
some are writing their stories, and in turn some are reading their stories, cuz those stories add enrich augment detour shortcircuit bedevil humour or affirm our own story. I say
others stories affirm our story.
and maybe in those moments, those storied moments, or in the afterglow of those moments . .
we feel that our story is loved.
someone or something loves our story.
our story is something to be loved.
and there are comics.
theyre here, theyre there, theyre everywhere
theyre somewhere else
theyre nowhere at all.
pgs 1 thru 17 and pgs 18 thru 23 and alls well . . and fun! to that I add
A poemitical puree purrrr from a rarebit fiend of a furry wabbit or passing thots as I understand my salf n tings via transport of les comics n comix, our indieweb book club book Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud, and a lil ol' self reflection and well, my life, so . .
here goes sumthin
In The Night Kitchen . .
Rhinelander in the night kitchen? no wait!
seems we're in the Origin Issue of comics in Understanding Comics and this may continue throughout. Giant-Size Flamin Origin Issue! which I dont mind at all, cuz really
its bringin out my own Origin Issue and yes maybe some o my issues but hey
c'est le vie
Art vs Comics vs Comics vs Art vs Comix n Art n Art n Comix n so on
INNER STANNING CRUMMY ICKS
Spotted in the wilds of Understanding Comics, litttle details, personal associations, peppered if u will with comics + relatedunrelated art imagery spontaneously shared if only jus cuz n cuz if jus only I like'm dot dot dot
quite possibly a drawing tipping its hat to photographer Irving Penn and his iconic n awesome Corner Portrait series
a Peter Bagge style drawing, Bagge of the edgy angry subpop grunge punk adrenalin-fueled rock n roll comix n album art set while post modern irreverent n funny flippin (off) the classic 50s 60s comics n cartoons script
Luvin! that the comic Love and Rockets was included on the World Comic Book Pantheon Globe (Maggie, I think) as this is one o my favorite comics of all time. Think: Archie Comics but squarely located in LA lowrider punk new wave on edge artists 80s 90s sometimes Future or Retro Future setting. A treasure of highly imaginative rich funny poignant edgy intimate tales of relationships n growingupness n underground youth culture. and yes, by gum, there is existential modern day angst and modern purrrdicerments and modern love. I was soo soulfully moved and entertained by Los Brothers Hernandez Vision, especially cuz the LA scene they celebrated was completely the one I grew up within and around as a West LA New Wave Mod Art Teen goin to clubs n shows n stuff n trying to figure stuff out circa late70s-to-mid80s, mayne
Surrealist Max Ernst mention'd n delved into. the book The Hundred Headless Woman / La Femme 100 Tetes by Max Ernst was one of thee first art books I ever got into and got for my own as a kid learnin myself up with art history mostly at the original location of LA art book store Hennessey + Ingalls Bookstore at Westland Outdoor Mall (at Pico & Westwood), AND this was also thee original locale for Hi De Ho Comics. So yep, ground central for me, shuttling back n forth between those two stores, learnin n growing myself up on comics n art, so-called high n low art all mixed up in my hungry imagination across the Baudrillard Desert of the Real bein as Multiculti PoMo LA as I hooyeah I wanna
God's Man by Lynd Ward. o my. another book, like the Max Ernst one, that I picked up at Hennessey + Ingalls Bookstore at a very tender age (trust me, theyre all tender) and one that I was totally absorbed by and, in turn, this book totally influenced me as an artist along with all the German Expressionist art that I ate up like a fiend who share that immediate impact-heavy style and the primal power of art
Jules Feiffer & Shel Silverstein mentioned and yeah they had their own form of fluid n loose yet Expressionistic powerfully emotive line. Now I'm thinkin of Edvard Munch, a small but very tight retrospective of his work at USC blew me away (when I was a teen? early 20s?) and weirdly or not so weirdly, thinkin about 70s Marvel Comics artists Frank Robbins and Gene Colan, the push pull attraction repulsion thing I had in heavy response to their weirdass artwork lurching along in 70s era The Invaders and Tomb of Dracula comics. I now can appreciate their raw edgy expressionistic style. highly individualistic !!!
Wha? No Arnold Roth? Charles Adams? Gahan Wilson? National Lampoon stuff. Heavy Metal magazine stuff. a very special place for Lil Annie Fanny and relatedly . . especially MAD Magazine! Car-toons. Surf-toons. Cracked Magazine. Wonder if, Edward Lear . . ??? well. maybe later in the book. no matter. I luv'd ALL these artists, comics, comix plus a way lot more. MAD Magazine and Edward Lear being ground central for me artwise aaand yeah, otherwise. no doubt. jus like (SST punk era pre AND post Blue Chip) Raymond Pettibon, Pushead, Robert Williams, Gee Vaucher & CRASS, Winston Smith and Shawn Kerri. Don't make me go into Wacky Packs and Ed Big Daddy Roth!! I still have my childhood wooden cigar box full of those stickers n trading cards. but whoa! hold the show! now I'm thinkin about my early art vs comics vs comix vs art stuff. once again living, lurking ALIVE and deep in my very own Origin Issue, finding me, a lil LA kid sitting on the floor of Hennessey & Ingalls and yeah . . hoping not to be kicked out and wildly eating this stuff up
Jess. of San Francisco. of Tricky Cad. hey I saw Tricky Cad in some art history book at Hennessey + Ingalls as a lad and it haunted me (as in: o b s e s s e d !) for a totally unaturally long ass time into early adulthood, as I could not remember who or what it was, other than I thot it was totally zany and amazing. Big influence on me once I figured out what n who it was n experienced Jess' entire Visionary work
Lichtenstein. how culd a kid not dig this artster and art star's Vision AND not feel at home with it? hey he was speakin our language. Comics Art goo-age. luuuv Pop Art and I still learn about art, comics, comix, communication arts, graphic art & design sense from it. Lichtenstein and all Pop Art is always the jelly donut. all we need do is take a bite
Warhol. oh my. I mean uh yeah. what can I say? enchanted enchanting art and design work from beginning to end. what an eye. if you dig comics, art, high concept art, graphic art & design sense, beauty . . I mean, sigh. Warhol is the gift that keeps on giving right up and through his very own hand moving the Amiga 1000 mouse. Warhol being Warhol while being proto computer artist in 1985. Warhol's Vision is still a big souffle of artistic richness and mystery on me, still so fun and energized, radically shortcircuiting practically everything we consider art. O Sweet Subversion

aand like Picasso and Dali, I adore all periods of Warhol's work and the evolution of his art. I luv the artist's story. comic book, high art and beyond! and hey if you like Warhol or simply curious about Warhol, check out the excellent netflix doc The Andy Warhol Diaries. or try the totally hilarious documentary Absolut Warhola. itsa gas!
speaking of Picasso n Comics, I enjoyed n learned some new things about Pablo + Satire in Spain

okey dokey big hi to our indieweb book club gruppette n passersby!
also noted in one of Scott McClouds drawings was the lil kid reading comics on his stomach on the floor. that definitely was me.
but more shag carpet.
